I was 40 when I got my first job at SINGER PHILIPPINES, the sewing machine company, after finishing my
Advanced Dressmaking course at Tesda ( Technological Education and Skills Development Authority ) in Taguig
and Fashion Design Course at Cora Doloroso Career Center in Makati.
The job title embraced creation of sewing modules for
sewing machine operation and
progressive sewing skills. Progressive
sewing skills was necessary because the company carried beginner types of machine to computerized industrial
ones.
I thought and I actually planned to keep that job temporarily while waiting to find an opportunity in the fashion world; the world I had dreamed of since I was child.
My first few months were rather chaotic because I had to carry out tasks, the objective of which were sometimes unclear to me.
I eventually learned I could actually ask about the -whys- of every order in case there was the need.
Little did I know
I was actually beginning to love the experience of learning new things about corporate business operation.
I
enjoyed creating illustrated modules about sewing machines and and sewing itself.
I got the chance to travel the entire Philippines to deliver
trainings
to company dealers and meet a lot people who needed my help.
And maybe for being naturally helpful and accommodating of most of their concerns within my capacity, I would sometimes find tokens of appreciation on my desk.
But know what?
What really made me feel
appreciated was when the General Manager directed me to handle irate customers whenever there was and of course, only after all efforts of the people assigned there failed.
I hardly noticed how years passed by.
Four beautiful Christmas parties endowed me beautiful gifts.
But we all had to face reality, SINGER PHILIPPINES must close.
I did not
get to see the sorrowful ending as i had to resign before it happened.
After almost five years of being away, I had to go back home, my late husband got sick.
