JOB OVERVIEW

Responsibilities
• Design book covers and interiors, including related research and communication
• Typeset and input corrections to book interiors
• Create and monitor schedules/production related vendor communication
• Create Indesign templates based on your designs.
• Miscellaneous design-related activities, strategic planning, and staff meetings
• Design print and online ads, catalog materials, posters, dummy books, and other marketing materials.
• Research stock illustrations and photographs for use in books or on book covers.
• Color correct and proof digital photography using color calibrated monitor and printer.
• Maintain schedules and meets deadlines on assigned projects.
• Tools to master for formatting/typesetting/interior design: Indesign, Ms Word, Vellum and others...
• Record tutorials for future members of the team
• Manage other members of the team

Required Qualifications
BFA or BA in Design or equivalent 4 years of work experience. Three or more years of publishing or related design experience. Exceptional design portfolio demonstrating an effective use of typography and conceptual thinking, including image research and design choices that are both innovative and subject-appropriate. Highly proficient in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat; proficient in Word and Excel. A portfolio demonstrating proficiency using InDesign paragraph and character styles to create attractive and effective book/magazine/long-format page layouts. Good in-person and written communication skills; must be open to receiving constructive criticism and feedback and be able to effectively advocate for your designs. Pre-press experience evaluating art for acceptable quality, making adjustments as needed, and preparing files according to printer specifications. An excellent eye for detail and commitment to producing the highest quality books. Ability to manage multiple and overlapping projects. Ability to lift a heavy carton of books. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, deadline-oriented, collaborative, and flexible in adapting to new technologies and workflows as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Google Drive and database software. A portfolio demonstrating Illustration skills is a bonus, but not required. Experience with both offset and POD/SRDP printing preferred. An interest in exploring, developing, and optimizing work-flow.
