I am a holder of baccalaureate degree in Nursing. In school, our clinical instructors imparted their knowledge and skills to us to provide care to individuals, families and communities. Nursing practice involves promoting health and wellness, preventing illness, restoring health, and care of the dying. We, nurses, undertake number of roles when providing care to clients. These roles include caregiver, communicator, teacher, client advocate, counselor, change agent, leader, manager, case manager, and research consumer.
The caregiver role has traditionally included those activities that give support to clients physically and psychologically while preserving the client’s dignity and right to privacy. Communication is requisite to all nursing roles. We communicate with the client, support persons, other health professionals and people in the community. In the role of communicator, we identify client problems and then communicate these verbally or in writing to other members of the health team. As a teacher, we educate clients and help them learn about their health and the health care procedures they need to perform to restore or maintain their health. A client advocate functions to protect the client. The nurse counsels primarily healthy individuals with normal condition adaptation difficulties and focuses on giving aid to the person to develop new attitudes, feelings, and behaviors by encouraging the client to look at alternative behaviors, recognize the choices, and develop a sense of control. The nurse acts as a change agent when assisting clients to make modifications in their own behavior. A leader influences others to work together to accomplish a specific goal. The nurse manages the nursing care of individuals, families, and communities. The nurse-manager also delegates nursing activities to ancillary workers and other nurses, and supervises and evaluates their performance. Nurse case managers work with the multidisciplinary health care team to measure the effectiveness of the case management plan and to monitor outcomes. Nurses often use research to improve client care. Every nurse may function in a variety of roles that are not exclusive of one another; in reality, they often occur together and serve to clarify the nurse’s activities.
Internet has already affected health care, with more and more clients becoming well informed about their health concerns. No longer the unsurpassed provider of health information, we, nurses, may need to interpret internet sources of information to clients and their families. Because not all of the internet-based information is exact and consistent with a standard, we need to become information brokers so we can help people to access high quality, valid websites; interpret the information; and then help clients evaluate the information and determine if it is useful to them.
