With my passion for the written word, further honed by my formal training as journalist in the University of the Philippines Los Banos, I am confident in my skills as writer, researcher, editor, and teacher.
As a fresh graduate way back in 2004, I immediately landed a job as Information Analyst in a multinational company. Our job was to write abstracts of articles from various disciplines, such as education, business, science, technology, architecture, arts, or basically, anything under the sun. Thus, it requires vast knowledge of general information and an excellent command of the English language. Despite my neophyte status, my ability to work nearly without supervision was commended by our team leaders. In fact, they strongly discouraged me from leaving, as I eventually discovered my calling as a teacher.
The five years that ensued were marked by sheer fulfillment and a certain level of drive to learn and relearn so I could share deeper insights with my students. Given my educational background, I was first designated as a Language teacher. As our department head witnessed my intellectual capacity and work ethics, he later entrusted me the task of teaching Social Science subjects as well. Not only did I develop expertise in teaching, but also a commitment to my students’ character building. I recognize my role as model to these bright, young minds. I know that I am not entitled to commit grievous mistakes for this can make or break a student’s future.
Apart from these full-time careers, I worked part-time as an online editor for Knowledge Growth Support. The beauty of being a college instructor is the flexibility of work hours. This gave me time to edit academic papers, such as technical reports, thesis and dissertations, among others. This specific job was tough considering the demand for a polished and flawless paper. We attended not only to grammar, but more so, to organization of ideas and overall coherence, unity, and consistency of thoughts. It is also imperative that we exercise our research skills, and this explains my adeptness in using the Internet. The strict deadlines also posed a challenge. Thus, in the process, I honed my time management skills and my ability to prioritize tasks at hand. Eventually, I was offered a Senior editor position which entails not only editing, but also writing recommendation letters, curriculum vitae, and other research projects.
All the while, I still make it a point to find time for reading and watching documentaries. These give me leisure. Most of all, fulfilling my duty as a mother to two lovely daughters keep me going. Undoubtedly, they serve as my inspiration.
