To become a waitress in an upscale and hip restaurant that is kid friendly by the beach. That is my dream job.
In my journey to become one, I have been...
...an administrative secretary for a tourism office. I did less on filing and more on editing articles and wrote speeches for the municipal mayors. Only one mayor did not need my speech writing assistance. I respect him up to this day.
...a waitress at an Italian cafe and a Filipino restaurant. My first two weeks in the cafe scared me. I was new in Sydney and could barely get through the mix of the Australian accent and Italian named dishes. I begged to clean the bathroom only for the first few weeks until I got used to the sound of Italian-Australian people talking. I loved the free food I got during lunch breaks at the Filipino restaurant.
...a factory worker for a catalogue shopping brand and a pharmaceutical company. I learnt that labeling a medicine bottle just a few millimeters off the designated area means it gets sent to the quarantined area - and free medicines for employees.
...a sales assistant for a baby store. I realized that I could sell for as long as I believed in a product... and that I can carry a heavy box with grace in a pencil cut skirt and heels. My first taste of being mentored at work.
...a random staff at a bookkeeping company. I went in for a few hours to help my brother reconcile accounts so he can meet his deadline and we can party over the weekend. I ended up with a job that eventually sent me on a working holiday to the Philippines. I apparently got offered a job because my writing was legible and that I could handle being sworn at with ease.
...a virtual assistant who handled lead generation, collections, bookkeeping and whatever the client is ready to pay and train for. I don't particularly like taking calls. I did countless to do the job.
...a customer service manager for an online retail company. My first taste of promotion and start up companies. I absolutely loved the part where I get to take care of my team and train them to be better. I hated the politics.
...an all-around gym staff. The closest thing I've done to reach my dream of becoming that waitress. I love the taking care of the customers. Learning how to operate a gym smoothly is still something I am improving on.
If only a simple waitressing job can pay the bills of a single mom. Until then, I'll keep doing two jobs. That I love. :-)
