A job I learned to live because I also want others to live. After passing the Nurse Licensure Examination last November 2009, I focused on looking for a hospital experience. I was so eager to grab an experience because I wanted to reach that point wherein I will be able to apply abroad just like most of the nurses here in the Philippines would do. But I realized that gaining clinical experience for a year as a novice was not enough.
During that year I honed my skills as I exposed myself to various cases in the ward of a tertiary level hospital. I learned to manage my time as I attend to the needs of the patients (e.g. taking the vital signs, doing other subjective and objective assessment, giving medications) and of their respective attending physicians. In carrying out a physician's order, one should also learn to discern as to why the physician is ordering such intervention for the patient. The next three years gave me the opportunity to become exposed in special areas like the operating room, delivery room, emergency room, and intensive care unit. Here I can see my evolution as I grow professionally. I get to head the neonatal intensive care unit and I get used to attending various meetings, submitting reports using MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and also in becoming part of the hiring committee for nurses. In between these years, I also joined what I call "extra-curricular activities". I help facilitate activities like scientific lecture, anniversary and Christmas celebration scratching from the start towards finishing the details of some activities. Aside from my nursing career, I am also into music and cooking. I play a bit of guitar and drums. I acquired my cooking skills from my mother who really has a passion for cooking. I am a nurse but I do not want to limit myself from things which I am capable of doing. Learning is, indeed, a continuous process.
