I live in the Philippines, where English is an official language, along with the local Filipino language. Back when I was in Grade School, we were obliged by our teachers to speak English whenever inside school premises or else you have to pay a certain amount for every non-English word you say. So, we were practicing the language since then. But learning English in school as a subject is not enough, one should be exposed outside school to really learn the language as a communicating tool. I used to travel a lot when I was still a flight attendant. I've been to Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, etc where in it was hard to converse with the locals using their language. Surprisingly, a lot of Koreans, Japanese and Chinese are now also learning to speak English, which made it easier for me to explore their city.
