Thinker – In marketing thinking is a very important. One should know how to envision and see the future. Brand direction is very vital in Brand management. In my marketing career, I practiced being an “imaginer”, to foresee what might happen or even forecast what might be the trade trend.
Planner – In marketing planning is everything. The moment you think of something (ie: campaign for the brand) everything follows, WHY – HOW – WHO – WHEN – DESIRED RESULT. Step-by step process should always be followed.
Leader & Follower – I believe these 2 qualities should really go hand-in-hand. Cliché as it may be, but it’s true that you can never be a good leader if you are not a good follower. Every employee should know when to be a leader and when to be a follower. As a Product Manager, being the parent of the brand is the best illustration I could do to further understand what brand management is. You take the lead role in bringing your brand to a higher level, to have bigger sales and to be significant in the minds of the consumer. But despite all this, you have to be a follower… of the company’s core values and goals and most especially, to your boss.
Aggressive – being aggressive in a good way is also one characteristic a Brand Manager has to have. I am much trained to calculate risk and to know when to do something and when to stop. I am aggressive to win over my competitors (other brands).
People person – Being in a marketing field, I am also trained to deal diplomatically to people. You see marketing is not just about selling the product, but actually selling your idea to the consumer for them to patronage your product. But before it comes to that you must first persuade the people around you that matters (other departments) to have a mindset like yours for the benefit of the company and the betterment of the product. This also provides a very good and easy working relationship with other people.
Presentation Skills – As I have mentioned, marketers are sellers of their idea. For you to be able to do this, being good in presenting should be one of your characteristic.
Time management Skills - I am currently working as a Product Manager w/ multiple brands and is currently enrolled in Master of Science in Marketing in De La Salle University. Time management is a skill of mine that I have been practicing for me to be able to do all my responsibilities.
