Reporting to: Head of XR Development
Collaborates with: Head of Development, Head of 3D Design, 3D Artists, Technical Artists, Project Managers, Animation & Real-Time Leads
Role Overview
3D Walkabout is seeking a Game Engine Developer with deep experience in both Unity and Unreal Engine to join our expanding development team. This role is ideal for a technically skilled, engine-focused programmer who can work across both engines to build high-quality, real-time interactive experiences for XR, simulation, and 3D visualisation projects.
You’ll collaborate closely with our Head of XR Development and broader technical team to deliver immersive VR, AR, and MR applications for enterprise, education, and creative clients across Australia.
Tools & Technologies
Essential
- Unity (C#) – extensive experience developing interactive XR applications
- Unreal Engine (Blueprints & C++) – solid understanding of engine architecture and performance optimisation
- ARCore / ARKit / AR Foundation – for AR applications across mobile platforms
- OpenXR, Oculus SDK, SteamVR, XR Interaction Toolkit – for headset-based deployment
- Shader development – HLSL, GLSL, or Unreal’s Material Editor
- 3D asset integration – efficient use of assets from Blender, Maya, or 3ds Max
- Git / GitHub / Perforce – for version control and collaborative development
Preferred
- Multi-platform deployment – including Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro, Pico, HTC Vive, and Windows Mixed Reality
- Networking / Multiplayer – Photon, Mirror, or Unreal Networking
- Profiling & Optimisation – experience using Unreal Insights, Unity Profiler, and GPU debuggers
- C++ plugin development – for custom Unreal Engine functionality
- Procedural generation tools – Houdini Engine, Niagara, or similar
- Integration with external APIs or IoT data for real-time simulations
- Experience with spatial streaming, cloud rendering, or PWA delivery
What You’ll Be Doing
- Game Engine & XR Development
- Develop immersive, interactive XR experiences using Unity and Unreal Engine
- Build VR and MR applications for devices such as Meta Quest, Apple Vision Pro, and Pico 4
- Implement custom gameplay systems, physics interactions, and data-driven logic
- Collaborate with 3D and technical artists to optimise real-time performance and visual quality
System & Tool Development
- Create reusable tools, scripts, and editor extensions to enhance internal workflows
- Integrate external APIs, sensors, or live data streams into engine environments
- Develop plugins or frameworks for modular XR and simulation projects
- Optimise projects for memory, performance, and cross-platform stability
Workflow & Collaboration
- Work closely with the Head of XR Development to define engine architecture standards
- Participate in code reviews, feature testing, and QA cycles
- Document codebases, engine setups, and pipelines for knowledge sharing
- Coordinate with designers and PMs to ensure timely, high-quality delivery
Research & Innovation
- Stay current on advances in game engine technology and XR hardware
- Prototype cutting-edge tools or workflows for future engine development
- Explore real-time rendering advancements such as Lumen, Nanite, and URP/HDRP
About You
- 4+ years of professional experience in Unity and/or Unreal Engine
- Strong programming background (C#, C++) and understanding of 3D mathematics
- Proven ability to ship projects across multiple devices and XR platforms
- Detail-oriented, with a focus on performance, scalability, and user experience
- Great communication and collaboration skills in remote team settings
- Passion for pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in real-time environments
Bonus Points For
- Experience with spatial computing (Apple Vision Pro, Magic Leap, Hololens 2)
- AI integration within game engines (e.g., procedural behaviours, computer vision)
- Knowledge of Unreal Engine source builds and custom engine compilation
- Familiarity with Python scripting for pipeline automation
- Experience in simulation, training, or serious game development
