Ruby On Rails Developer (Remote)

We are seeking a talented Ruby on Rails Developer to join our software engineering team at Global Health. In this role, you will contribute to the design, development, and maintenance of scalable digital health applications that enable interoperability, secure communications, and connected care across Australia.

This position involves backend API development, integrations with third-party systems (including FHIR-based servers), and enhancements to frontend user experiences.

Key Responsibilities

1) Design, develop, and maintain Ruby on Rails applications — including backend APIs, frontend views, and service integrations.
2) Leverage AI productivity tools for code generation, refactoring, and testing automation to improve development throughput and reliability.
3) Document system architecture, APIs, and workflows, using AI tools for summarization and technical writing assistance.
4) Online appointment bookings and teleconsultation features
5) Digital forms, secure messaging, and organisational dashboards
6) Integrations with EMRs, PMS, and patient-facing applications
7) Implement and maintain FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) and HL7 integrations for health data exchange.
8) Develop and maintain RESTful APIs with proper authentication and documentation.
9) Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested Ruby code using RSpec, Capybara, or equivalent frameworks.
10) Participate in code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, and agile sprint cycles.
11) Optimise application performance, scalability, and security across environments.
12) Contribute to architectural design discussions and documentation.

Required Skills & Experience

1) 3+ years of professional experience with Ruby on Rails.
2) Proven experience with AI-assisted development environments (e.g. GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Replit Ghostwriter, or similar).
3) Ability to effectively prompt and guide AI coding assistants for rapid prototyping, code review, testing, and documentation.
4) Strong understanding of PostgreSQL, Redis, Sidekiq, and other background job frameworks.
5) Proven experience developing and consuming FHIR or HL7 APIs.
6) Experience with REST API design, OAuth2, and HTTP Basic Authentication.
7) Familiarity with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and frontend frameworks such as Stimulus, React, or Vue.
8) Solid experience with testing frameworks (RSpec, Capybara) and Git-based workflows.
9) Familiarity with Docker, AWS, Heroku, or other cloud deployment platforms.
10) Understanding of healthcare data privacy, cybersecurity, and compliance with Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) and HIPAA.
