Overview
We are a professional land surveying firm seeking a technically strong geospatial engineer to design and implement an automated workflow for processing, organizing, and archiving survey field data.
This role focuses on survey-grade data automation, not web mapping, not cartography.
Our field crews use Topcon data collectors (FC-5000) producing proprietary MJF files, along with static GNSS observations and total station datasets. We want to eliminate repetitive manual handling and build a scalable, automated data pipeline.
What You’ll Build
You will design and implement a Python-based automation system that:
Monitors and backs up raw field data
Parses proprietary MJF survey files
Extracts coordinate and observation data
Separates:
Raw WGS84 coordinates
Localized coordinate systems
State Plane data (when applicable)
Processes static GNSS datasets
Extracts residuals and localization fit metrics
Identifies total station occupation/backsite errors
Preserves control point (GCP) history in WGS84
Automatically unzips, renames, and archives field exports
Generates QA/QC summary reports
Organizes everything into a clean, scalable job directory structure
Optionally builds a structured database (SQLite/PostgreSQL)
This is backend engineering for survey data systems.
Required Skills
Strong Python scripting experience
Experience parsing structured or semi-structured files (binary, CSV, database exports)
Solid understanding of coordinate systems:
WGS84
State Plane
Local coordinate systems
Familiarity with GNSS concepts:
Static observations
Base/Rover workflows
Localization
Residuals
Experience with:
pandas
pyproj
geopandas (preferred)
Experience building automated workflows or ETL pipelines
Strongly Preferred Background
Geodetic Engineering
Land Surveying
Geomatics
Geodesy
GNSS data processing
RINEX file handling
Topcon / Trimble / Leica data formats
Survey QA/QC automation
What This Is Not
This is NOT:
A web map developer role
A cartography or visualization job
A CAD drafting position
A general IT support role
We are looking for someone comfortable with:
Coordinate transformations
Data parsing logic
Survey error analysis
Automation architecture
Clean data structuring
Project Scope
Initial engagement will focus on building the core automation pipeline.
There is strong potential for long-term collaboration and expansion into:
Data architecture refinement
QA reporting tools
Survey data analytics
Internal system integrations
To Apply
Please include:
Examples of automation scripts or data pipelines you have built
Any experience working with survey or GNSS datasets
A short explanation of how you would approach parsing a proprietary survey data format
Your experience with coordinate transformations
Your availability and expected hourly rate
Bonus: If you have worked with Topcon, RINEX, or GNSS static data, please describe your experience.
