JOB OVERVIEW

BACKGROUND
I'm a filmmaker and entrepreneur. I edit myself but now seek an editor *better* than me, leaving me free to shoot and present.
I travel round the world and am braking out into new territories, to make two types of films.
1) short documentaries (10-30mins) on personal growth, learning new skills e.g. sports with top experts in the world.
2) biotech/biohacking promos (3-10mins) showcasing new health technology that I try out in person e.g. I try out stem cell ---------- itially these films will be for sports professional, or startup tech companies. I want editing quality as high as possible, so I can engage more viewers and attract more financial backing from companies + also attention of television production companies.

My overall goal with these films is to: inspire, teach and show people how to get a positive results in their life by first doing it on camera myself.

My style is to present authentic information yet I also brake rules sometimes. I say/do things that may be unconventional or even inappropriate yet hopefully entertain (and make audience chuckle! :)

Most of all, I want someone who loves, lives and breathes editing and has a special knack telling a compelling story in a fun way.

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE
1) Professional documentary/story telling experience essential. Ideally with broadcast TV or documentary feature film experience.
2) English to a high level (to understand subtle film dialogue)

DETAILS ON HOW TO APPLY: (please answer all these questions briefly)
1a) Do you have an IMDB profile? YES/NO if so please send.

Please watch this link (3mins): ----------
I did cinematography, you can see me briefly in shot at 2:27 on left with my Sony FS5 camera - blonde hair(!)
1b) Can you edit and finish a film to this quality?
1c) How many days would it typically take you to edit this? (if given a clear brief and daily feedback/discussions with me on your edit)
1d) How independent are you. If given minimal direction, could you watch the 20 hours of above multi-cam footage and select the most powerful compelling soundbites to create a good story all on your own?
1e) If so please send 1 link of your best example of a story that you told with minimal direction and a sentence or two explaining.

2) Please watch this link (90secs): ----------
I show you this for two reasons. First, this is an example of my humour and ---------- ’s not real, I faked it, it was a an attempt at a viral promo for my friend’s business to attract more ---------- quickly got 126k views but their lawyers asked it to be pulled sadly(!)
I created the story, did the editing, found the stock footage, did the title/motion graphics (to make my friend appear on BBC television) I hired a professional VO artist for the end part when woman speaking (she was actually talking about Donald Trump , hence Whitehouse in background but I made it appear as if she was talking about my friend).
Second, I want to use this as a benchmark for job ---------- n you equal this realism?
2a) are you able to edit and polish a film to look this real? (By ‘polish’ I mean colour grade, basic sound edit, linking animation e.t.c so it looks slick/smooth)
2b) If so, could you give your best example link of a well polished film? [if you don’t have please just say so. I’m actually I’m more interested in your story telling ability, though being able to polish films is a helpful skill for me also.]

3) In addition to the above 1 or 2 links. Please send me 1-2 more links of your *best* editing work.
They should be links with documentary/mini doc type film, or something with a story & dialogue [not music videos please and not a page with dozens of videos, just your best link :)]
For each link please state who video was for, and what your contribution was and what you are most proud of in it.

4) What interests you so far about this job and why you think you’d be a good fit.

5) Any further questions or concerns you have about this role? Was there anything I could have written to explain better? I appreciate your honest feedback.
6) Please put "DOCUMENTARY EDITOR WITH PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE" in email subject ---------- eers guys.
P.s. I respect talent, experience and work ethic foremost, I will offer 2nd interviews based on the quality of your work from links you send - I will not judge you on your age, gender or religious beliefs.

JOB DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES
1) After receiving video and audio files online and sync in your editor. You will be in charge of completing the story edit of films following a brief.
2) Editing is an iterative process. You will edit draft cuts. I’ll provide evaluation, we will discuss then you will implement changes.
3) Sometimes I may provide highly detailed brief. Other times it may be minimal and I trust you to make decisions by yourself / or try your own ideas first.
4) Often quick turnaround will be needed. You will need to strike the fine line between high quality work & releasing work quickly
5) You will be a valuable sounding board for my edit ideas. I have many ideas some are fun, exciting.. and sometimes they are not so good! I need someone pragmatic to help me sort the great from the terrible. Your opinions are valuable to me.

WHAT FILMS YOU WILL BE WORKING ON
1) I’ve just started a 10 min documentary on freediving. I filmed a lesson with me with one of the best freedivers in the world on Saturday. You will immediately start a rough cut on this - should be fun. Quite a few jokes in there. I’m pretty clear on the story ---------- may be entered for a film festival.
2) I’m finishing a 7-8 mins promo on Astral ---------- ’s almost completed. I managed it badly and took ages, I will need some help to finish and polish.
3) I may be taking on a bigger documentary project (1 hr film) with me learning a new sport. Will take 2-3 months to shoot. I will send you footage each week and you would start editing this to help develop story. Your feedback will help me know what else we need to ---------- may also be entered for a film festival.
4) I will be making short business promos on biotech/health. I’ll direct you what I’m looking for & will need a quick turnaround

Initially the current projects are on a budget and shot semi-professionally so I need a great editor who can add a professional shine, and help me tell a great story.
Within 3-6 months, covid allowing, budget for production will increase, I’ll be working with professional film crews and production quality will go up significantly.

BONUS TECHNICAL SKILLS - not essential but nice to have
1) FCPX a bonus (as this is what I use)
2) basic colour grading ability
3) sound editing/design
4) Motion graphics SFX

SOFT SKILLS
1) Reliability, honesty, solid work ethic
2) Organised workflow, working to deadlines. Someone who can finish projects and gets things done.
3) Open communication - if you get stuck or have a problem you must discuss with me immediately so I can help you. I want to help you. You help me by doing a great job, and I help you to do a great job, it’s a two way street :)
4) Critical debates - as an editor you may disagree with my opinions. I want to hear that. Ultimately I have to call the shots, but I really want (and need) your wisdom and honest feedback. If something looks shit, please tell me because it needs to be said - I’d rather have a heated discussion with you and a small dent in my ego, if it results in a better film :)

SALARY, WORK SCHEDULE AND HOLIDAYS, PERKS AND BENEFITS
1) Salary will depend on your current level and experience how much I need to guide you. I’ve put in an approximate range. You can also let me know what your last salary was & what you are seeking for your skills as a guideline.
2) This is a full-time position Mondays to Fridays. We may need to arrange 4 hours fixed time based on our time zones, but the other 4 hours may be flexible e.t.c.
3) You’ll qualify for 3 vacation leaves and 3 sick leaves after the 6 month probation period. We honour most Filipino holidays except for All Saints and All Souls Day.
4) Once you complete your 6 months probation, you will get 13th month.
5) Flexibility will naturally increase over time as we get used to working with each other and trust builds up. Perhaps you wish to work on weekends and have weekday off e.t.c. I want to help you to work in a way that suits you and your lifestyle ---------- REER POTENTIAL & TRAINING
I will train you to deliver my vision, though the real training will come from the variety of many different projects you complete. As business grows, you will naturally take on projects with more responsibility, possibly being asked to manage other team members. You will also get to experiment and ‘play’ with ideas lodes. Over time, as business grows you will be collaborating more and more with other professionals a real breeding ground for learning. Editing is hard work at times but this role should be fun for you too.
