The Black Lives Matter movement and the March on Selma both had a huge impact by helping bring equality for the African American community. There are many similarities between the two movements. They both were peaceful protests met with police brutality. Both also used similar tactics such as strong messages and inclusive involvement. However, with saying that, there were some major differences and changes that occurred from earlier movements such as the Selma march to the newer 21st century movement of BLM. To start with, BLM obviously had more efficient resources such as social media to get the word around and help the message spread whereas in the 1950s/60s they did not have the same access to this and the message was spread mostly through word of mouth. Even with their differences both movements had major lasting impacts. After the Selma march the right to vote was successfully secured, and after the BLM protests more equality was shown. The movements that occurred in the book “March” as well as BLM had the same intention and with their similarities/differences, they were able to successfully get their message across.

The incident was recorded and gained tons of attention from around the world which brought “BLM” to the centre spotlight of the world. We can see a similar event happen in the book which was the murder of Jimmie Lee Jackson. Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot by a state trooper while protesting the arrest of James Orange. The anger after his death is what helped get the Selma march initiated, which eventually led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Both cases brought up the existing issue of racism in America as each case involved a police officer killing an unarmed black citizen. Even to this day African Americans are treated differently by police due to their skin color. Both movements grew at a rapid pace due to someone's death, and they were able to use the death to gain motivation.
