Job Description: The Weekend Editor/Writer is expected to manage and write news published on our website from approximately 10:00AM US EST to 10:00PM midnight US EST. This is a contractor half-time position (20 hours per weekend, with 2 hours of total break time each day). We require a person with a focus on accuracy, timeliness, and conforming to our news policies and standards. This is a work from home online-based job. Reliable internet access and computer required.
Job Duties Include:
- Oversee news writing team during weekend (typically 1 writer who writes 12 articles) to ensure article quality and standards are met and communicate feedback.
Identify breaking news and ensure weekend news team covers it quickly
- Proofread articles written by news team and check for factual accuracy. Confirm they meet all of our editorial guidelines, standards, and policy requirements.
- Write 8 news articles (400 word minimum) on Saturday, and 8 news articles on Sunday
- Select relevant cover images for articles that meet our policy requirements
- Publish completed articles to site and share to social media pages
- Share previously completed list articles and other content to social media pages
- Update website slider
- Manage spreadsheets and news task assignments
- Improve and maximize website readership on weekends
- Coach weekend news writing team
- All other duties as assigned
About Us: We're a US-based company looking for a half-time professional Weekend Editor/Writer for a US-based website that publishes articles about geek culture (movies, TV shows, comic books, anime, games & books) The Ideal Candidate we're looking for should have:
> Passion for geek culture topics such as movies, TV shows, comic books, games, novels, and anime
> A bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, creative writing, marketing or related field
> 1-3 years of relevant experience in editorial management
> 2+ years of relevant writing experience with a news website
> Professional editing, journalism, and writing experience and knowledge
> Excellent English grammar, spelling, and copywriting skills
> Self-motivated and positive attitude
> Ability to give feedback and communicate effectively
> Reliable Internet connection and computer access to work online
> Proficient with word processing and spreadsheet management
> Basic image editing skills. Photoshop experience a plus.
> Availability to work hours specified and occasional later hours on weekend (for special Weekend event coverage such as San Diego Comic Con).
