I’m an assistant professor and researcher at a graduate theological school in Berkeley, CA, currently directing an oral history project focused on Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. I’m looking for a detail-oriented administrative assistant to support my research, student advising, and calendar management on an ongoing basis.
What you’ll be doing
• Tracking and maintaining records for a roster of graduate student advisees (deadlines, milestones, follow-ups)
• Scheduling and coordinating interviews for an active oral history research project, including outreach to participants and logistics tracking
• Managing my calendar — appointments, meetings, deadlines, and reminders
• Preparing brief reports so we can review status together on regular Zoom check-ins
• General administrative tasks:
What I’m looking for
• Strong written English and communication skills
• Experience with Google Calendar, Google Drive, and spreadsheets
• Reliable internet connection and availability for Zoom check-ins
• Organized, proactive, and comfortable working async with a supervisor who trusts you to flag problems early
• Prior experience supporting academics or researchers is a plus but not required
Hours and compensation
• Approximately 10 hours per week, with some flexibility as project phases shift
• $8/hour, paid weekly via Wise
About the research
This position supports two interconnected bodies of work. The first is the PANA Oral Narratives Project, a commissioned oral history archive documenting the lives and activism of Asian American and Pacific Islander religious leaders and community organizers. The second is a book manuscript under contract with an academic press. Both projects involve interview coordination, archival organization, and ongoing correspondence with scholars, community members, and institutional partners.
About the field
I’m a scholar of Christian ethics, liturgical studies, and decolonial theory, working at the intersection of Asian American studies, feminist theology, and community-based research. My work is academic but community-rooted — you’ll be supporting correspondence and logistics that connect a university context with Filipino American and broader AAPI communities. Familiarity with academic or nonprofit environments is helpful; deep knowledge of the field is not necessary.
About our check-ins
We’ll meet on Zoom on a regular cadence — likely biweekly — for you to walk me through a status report on active tasks: interview scheduling, advisee milestones, calendar, and any open items. I’ll use these meetings to give direction and answer questions. Outside of those meetings, the work is fully async, so strong written communication and the ability to flag problems proactively are essential.
To apply
Please send a brief introduction — who you are, your relevant experience, and why this role interests you. A sample of a document you’ve organized or a process you’ve managed is welcome but optional.
