Job Opportunity: Wikipedia Specialist (Consultant/Freelance)
We are seeking a highly experienced Wikipedia Specialist to draft and manage a formal entry for a long-standing, respected news publishing platform. This is a targeted project for a professional who understands the nuances of the Wikimedia ecosystem, specifically regarding notability guidelines for digital media and journalism.
The Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end process of establishing a credible Wikipedia presence. This is not just about writing; it is about navigating the complex editorial standards of Wikipedia to ensure a neutral, fact-based, and permanent entry.
Key Responsibilities
Audit & Strategy: Conduct a thorough review of existing third-party coverage to ensure the publication meets Wikipedia’s General Notability Guideline (GNG) and the specific criteria for Organizations and Companies.
Content Creation: Draft a comprehensive, neutral, and encyclopedic entry covering the publication’s history, editorial focus, significant milestones, and impact on the media landscape.
Sourcing: Identify and integrate high-quality, independent, secondary sources (e.g., major news outlets, academic citations, industry awards) to verify all claims.
Submission & Mediation: Manage the "Articles for Creation" (AfC) process and respond professionally to any inquiries or edits from the Wikipedia community.
Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to Wikipedia’s policies, including Conflict of Interest (COI) disclosures and Neutral Point of View (NPOV) requirements.
Required Skills & Experience
Proven Track Record: A portfolio of successfully published Wikipedia entries for companies, public figures, or media outlets.
Policy Expertise: Deep knowledge of Wikipedia’s "Five Pillars" and a nuanced understanding of what constitutes a "reliable source."
Journalistic Writing: The ability to write in a detached, objective tone—avoiding "marketing-speak" or promotional language.
Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with Wiki-markup or VisualEditor and the platform's backend community standards.
