Sycamore Business Strategies is a growing U.S.-based accounting, tax, and advisory firm serving small business owners and their families.
We are hiring a U.S. Tax Senior Associate to help prepare individual and business tax returns, organize tax workpapers, identify tax issues, draft client questions, and support the firm’s tax workflow.
This is not a bookkeeping, virtual assistant, payroll-only, data entry, or general accounting role. This role requires hands-on experience preparing U.S. tax returns for a CPA firm, tax firm, or similar professional tax practice.
About the Role
This is a senior-level tax preparation role for someone who can work independently, use good judgment, and prepare returns to a high standard before owner/CPA review.
The firm owner will review and sign all returns, but the Tax Senior Associate should be able to move tax projects forward with limited oversight, identify missing information or inconsistencies, and help create a smooth tax preparation process.
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepare U.S. individual and business tax returns, including Forms 1040, 1120-S, and 1065
- Prepare Schedule C, Schedule E, rental property, K-1, and small business tax returns
- Prepare multi-state individual and business tax returns
- Review client tax documents and organize complete workpapers
- Identify missing information, inconsistencies, and potential tax issues
- Draft client follow-up questions in clear, professional English
- Communicate with clients and tea
- Prepare returns accurately and efficiently for owner/CPA review
- Assist with tax projections, estimated tax calculations, and tax planning projects
- Help maintain tax workflows, checklists, templates, intake forms, and internal processes
- Maintain accurate task statuses, notes, documentation, and communication records
- Work across cloud-based tax, document management, task management, and client communication platforms
- Assist with payroll tax, sales tax, and other compliance work during non-peak periods as needed
Required Experience
Please apply only if you have direct hands-on experience preparing U.S. tax returns.
Required experience includes:
- Experience preparing U.S. Form 1040 individual tax returns
- Experience preparing U.S. business tax returns, especially Forms 1120-S and/or 1065
- Experience working with tax workpapers and client-provided documents
- Experience identifying missing information and drafting follow-up questions
- Strong written English communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
Preferred Experience
The following experience is preferred but not required:
- Experience with Intuit ProConnect
- Experience with QuickBooks Online
- Experience with small business owners, S corporations, partnerships, and rental real estate
- Experience with multi-state individual or business returns
- Experience with tax projections and estimated tax calculations
- Experience with payroll tax and/or sales tax
- Experience helping improve tax workflows, templates, or internal processes
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is experienced, organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable taking ownership of tax work from document intake through preparation and review.
This person should not simply enter data into tax software. They should be able to review documents, understand what is missing, recognize potential issues, ask thoughtful questions, and prepare a return that is ready for owner/CPA review.
The right candidate will be comfortable working in a small but growing firm where systems and processes are being built and improved over time.
Work Schedule
This is a remote role. Some overlap with U.S. Central Time will be required, especially during tax season and for tea
Please include your general availability and whether you are seeking full-time or part-time work.
