Job Title: Case Manager
Job Summary:
The Asylum Legal Assistant provides administrative and legal support to immigration attorneys and assists clients seeking asylum in the United States. This role involves client interaction, preparation of legal documents, research, and case management to ensure that asylum claims are properly documented and submitted in a timely manner.
Key Responsibilities:
• Case Management: Assist in managing asylum case files from the initial intake to completion. Track important deadlines, hearings, and updates for each case.
• Client Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, answering questions, gathering information, and keeping them updated on case progress. Maintain client confidentiality and sensitivity to their situation.
• Document Preparation: Assist in drafting, proofreading, and organizing legal documents, including asylum applications (Form I-589), affidavits, supporting evidence, and legal correspondence.
• File Maintenance: Organize and maintain physical and digital case files. Ensure that all necessary paperwork is completed and filed with the appropriate agencies.
• Legal Research: Conduct research on relevant case law, country conditions, and asylum policies. Provide summarized reports for attorney review.
• Translation and Interpretation: If proficient in multiple languages, assist with translating documents and interpreting during client meetings.
• Immigration Court Support: Prepare attorneys for hearings by compiling case documents, organizing exhibits, and briefing the attorney on case specifics. Attend hearings as needed for support.
• Liaison with Government Agencies: Communicate with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and immigration courts on behalf of the attorney or client.
• Intake Process: Help screen potential clients, collect initial information, and schedule consultations with attorneys.
• Assist with Filing: Submit applications, motions, and other necessary filings to the courts or USCIS.
• Administrative Support: Perform general office duties such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and managing calendars for attorneys.
Skills and Qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., legal studies, political science) or a paralegal certificate is preferred. Experience in immigration law is highly valued.
• Language Proficiency: Fluency in multiple languages (e.g., Spanish, French, Arabic) is a significant advantage due to the diverse clientele.
• Organizational Skills: Strong attention to detail, ability to manage multiple cases, and prioritize tasks effectively.
• Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to handle sensitive client interactions.
• Research Ability: Proficiency in legal research and familiarity with asylum laws and country conditions.
• Technology: Proficient in Microsoft Office, legal case management software, and electronic filing systems.
• Confidentiality: Ability to maintain client confidentiality and comply with legal and ethical standards.
Preferred Experience:
• Prior experience working in immigration law or asylum cases.
• Familiarity with USCIS and immigration court procedures.
• Experience working with vulnerable populations, such as refugees and asylum seekers.
Work Environment:
• Office-based work, with some remote support depending on the firm’s setup.
• May require occasional attendance at immigration hearings or asylum interviews.
• Interaction with clients who may be experiencing trauma, requiring empathy and professionalism.
