About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Bookkeeper to own the full accounting cycle for a portfolio of nonprofit clients. This role begins part-time and expands to full-time as performance benchmarks are met. You will work within our established systems and be accountable to firm-wide accuracy and deadline standards from day one. This is not an entry-level role. You are expected to arrive with a fully developed competency in nonprofit accounting and the professional judgment to apply it independently across multiple clients in a remote environment.

Full Accounting Cycle Management
- Record and classify all transactions on an accrual basis in the accounting system with proper account coding, class tracking, and fund designation.
- Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable: enter vendor bills, process payments, record invoices, and apply receipts accurately.
- Prepare and post all month-end journal entries, including accruals, prepaid amortization, depreciation, and deferred revenue schedules.
- Complete bank, credit card, and balance sheet account reconciliations to zero variance every month without exception.
- Review the trial balance for anomalies, transposition errors, and misclassifications before financials are issued to clients.
- Produce and deliver month-end financial statements: Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities, and Budget vs. Actual reports.

Nonprofit-Specific Accounting
- Apply FASB ASC 958 and ASU ---------- standards, including proper net asset classification (with donor restrictions and without donor restrictions).
- Track restricted and unrestricted funds separately and release restrictions when grant conditions are met with proper journal entry documentation.
- Allocate expenses across program services, management and general, and fundraising functions using class tracking in QBO.
- Prepare grant expenditure reports and supporting schedules for client grant reporting requirements.
- Support Form 990 preparation by maintaining clean, organized records and preparing schedules as requested.
- Coordinate with external auditors by providing supporting documentation, reconciling the PBC (Prepared by Client) list items, and responding to audit requests.
- Record semi-monthly payroll journal entries with accurate allocation across cost centers, grants, and functional expense categories.
- Reconcile payroll liability accounts monthly and confirm tax deposits are accurately reflected in the books.

Quality Control and Communication
- Identify errors, inconsistencies, and missing information proactively before they reach the client.
- Proactively communicate issues to the firm owner, team leads, and clients, including a proposed resolution in every notification.
- Meet all client deliverable deadlines, maintaining an accuracy benchmark across all client work.
- Manage workload without micromanagement and follow the firm’s documented processes.

Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of accrual-basis nonprofit accounting experience with demonstrated ability to apply accrual accounting, including fund accounting, net asset classifications under ASU ---------- , grant tracking, and functional expense allocation independently and without supervision.
- Experience managing multiple clients simultaneously in an outsourced accounting firm or agency setting. Sequential full-time employer roles are not equivalent.
- Minimum 12 consecutive months of fully remote, self-directed work with independent deadline management.
- Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online, Xero, Asana, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office.
- Professional written and verbal communication in English, including the ability to explain accounting issues clearly to non-accounting clients.
- Revenue Recognition: Demonstrated ability to apply ASC 606 and ASC 842 standards, specifically managing revenue recognition based on grant documents, funder restrictions, and milestones.
- Technical Mastery: Deep understanding of U.S.A GAAP and grant compliance standards.
- Startup Mindset: Ability to context-shift between a variety of clients and thrive in an agile, fast-paced environment.
- Experience supporting Form 990 preparation and annual audit coordination.
- Familiarity with federal, state, or foundation grant compliance reporting requirements.
