What This Job Is
A fully remote, senior finance leadership role for a profitable US-based food and wellness company. You are the sole finance person — no team, no manager above you in finance. You report directly to the COO and own everything related to money, tax, and accounting.
What the Company Does
-Delivers chef-designed, health-focused meals (gluten/dairy/sugar-free) to high-net-worth clients across California and nationally
-Has a commercial production kitchen, farm partnership, and logistics network
-Sells direct-to-consumer (D2C) via Shopify and ships nationally
-Growing into CPG products — cookies, pantry items, retail
-$26M revenue, 12%+ net profit margin — bootstrapped and stable
What You Will Own
-Tax — everything
File all federal, state, city and county corporate tax returns
Research and claim R&D credits, WOTC, donated food credits, energy credits
Handle all IRS correspondence and audits independently
Work toward or maintain Enrolled Agent credentials
-Accounting Operations — everything
Approve every single expense at the company
Own month-end close (target 3–5 days)
Prepare monthly P&L, balance sheet, cash flow statements
Reconcile Shopify, Stripe, and other merchant processors
-Manufacturing Accounting — complex
Track inventory for perishable/fresh food
Allocate COGS across culinary labor, delivery labor, food purchases, packaging
Manage shrinkage and waste tracking
Build production cost models by SKU and menu item
-Strategic Finance — forward looking
Build budgets, forecasts, and scenario models
Implement and upgrade QuickBooks, Xero, Bill.com, Dext
Segregate P&Ls for 3 business units with different economics
Build financial infrastructure that scales to $50M–$100M
-Who This Is For
Someone with 5–7 years of progressive US accounting experience who has been the sole finance lead at a company — not a support person, not someone who sends reports to a US controller for review. Someone who has built systems, filed tax returns, and made decisions independently.
-What Makes It Different From a Typical Controller Role
You are replacing all outsourced CPA/tax services — massive scope
Direct daily access to the COO in Las Vegas
Performance bonus up to $40K on top of $40K base = $80K maximum
Clear path to VP Finance as company scales
Intellectually complex — farm-to-table supply chain, perishable inventory, multi-state compliance, new CPG lines all at once
-Non-Negotiables
CPA or equivalent
US GAAP — not IFRS only
Minimum 4–5 hours overlap with Pacific Time (8am–12pm PT)
Fluent business English
Ownership mentality — "I built," "I decided," "I own" — not "we supported"
