JOB OVERVIEW

About us

The Geek Department (TGD) is a Belgium-based IT and web development services provider. We support
SaaS companies with additional development capacity, build software applications, web platforms and
websites for governmental institutions and SMEs, and help SMEs tackle modern cybersecurity
challenges.

We work on a range of customer projects, so the technical stack and problem space can vary. We value
pragmatic engineering, clear communication, and reliable delivery.

What we’re offering you
- Remote-first role based in the Philippines.
- Freelance / project-based engagement with the opportunity for repeat projects and longer-term
collaboration.
- Competitive rates (based on experience and project scope) and straightforward, professional working
arrangements.
- A company investing in its Philippines-based team, with a focus on sustainable workload, professional
growth, and long-term relationships.
- A culture that encourages critical thinking: you can influence workflows, engineering standards, and how
we deliver.

What we expect of you
- Strong ownership and a bias for delivery without compromising quality.
- Ability to work independently on scoped deliverables, while collaborating effectively with a distributed
team.
- Professional reliability: meeting commitments, communicating early when timelines change, and keeping
work visible.
- We value direct, professional communication: concise updates, early escalation of blockers, and clear
documentation.
- Some flexibility is required for meetings across time zones (typically Europe/Belgium time; specific
overlap depends on the customer project).

Typical responsibilities
- Documenting and writing functionalities with a future mindset.
- Design, build, and maintain software and APIs.
- Translate requirements into pragmatic technical solutions; clarify scope early and surface risks.
- Write production-grade code with strong testing discipline (unit/integration where relevant) and readable
documentation.
- Collaborate with product/PM and occasionally clients (depending on project set-up).
- Collaborate closely with Belgium-based QA: provide test notes, acceptance criteria clarifications, and
fast turnaround on defects.
- Ensure work is testable and reviewable: meaningful PR descriptions, predictable environments, and clear
implementation notes.
- Troubleshoot issues in production systems and contribute to root-cause analysis and prevention.

Required skills and experience
- Clear spoken and written English.
- Comfortable working with Git-based workflows (Git, CI CD with strong documentation).
- Solid database experience (typically SQL) and data modelling understanding.
- Knowledge of the latest web technologies.
- Basic knowledge: PHP, CSS, JavaScript/Typescript

Nice to have skills and experience
- Experience building and operating multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
- Proven experience delivering system integrations (third-party APIs, internal services, event-driven
workflows).
- Security-minded engineering (secure coding practices, threat awareness, handling sensitive data).
- Exposure to government and/or enterprise delivery environments (procurement constraints,
documentation requirements, compliance-minded work).

Additional technologies (project-dependent)
- Front-end: jQuery, Tailwind CSS
- PHP: Symfony, Laravel, CodeIgniter
- Node.js: React, Next.js, Express.js, Mongoose
- .NET / Java ecosystems: ASP.NET, JSP
- Other languages: Java, C#
