Role summary
We are recruiting a part-time Financial Controller to take ownership of day-to-day finance operations and management reporting. You will run payroll, manage invoicing, keep the accounting system accurate and up to date, and produce straightforward monthly reporting on business performance.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys building clean processes in a new business, keeping things pragmatic and well controlled.
Key responsibilities
Payroll
Run payroll end to end, including validating hours, calculating pay, producing payslips and ensuring payments are processed correctly
Maintain payroll records, starters/leavers and basic holiday tracking
Ensure consistent handling of mileage and any agreed allowances
Invoicing and accounts receivable
Raise and send invoices accurately and on time
Track payments, reconcile receipts and maintain a clear view of outstanding debt
Manage credit control in a professional, relationship-aware way
Accounting system allocations and reconciliations
Allocate income and costs correctly in the accounting system (coding, VAT where applicable, tracking by service line where needed)
Reconcile bank accounts and key balances regularly
Keep records clean so reporting is reliable and audit-ready
Reporting and performance insight
Produce a monthly reporting pack covering revenue, costs, margin, cash position and key trends
Provide light-touch analysis on what is driving performance (for example service line, client type, delivery model)
Support basic forecasting and cashflow visibility as the business grows
Process improvement and controls
Put in place practical templates, checklists and approval steps to keep finance consistent and efficient
Liaise with external accountant/bookkeeper as needed for VAT and year-end
Essential requirements
Proven experience running payroll and invoicing in a small business environment
Strong bookkeeping capability, including reconciliations and transaction coding discipline
Confident producing management reporting and explaining performance clearly
Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills
High attention to detail, sound judgement and a hands-on approach
Comfortable working independently in a fully remote role
Desirable
Experience setting up finance processes in a new or scaling business
Familiarity with Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent (or similar)
Experience with services businesses using hourly delivery and mileage
Working pattern
Part time and flexible. There will be a steady weekly cadence, with busier periods around payroll and month-end reporting.
