PV & ESS Engineering Plan Designer
Department: Engineering / Design
Reports To: Operations Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
About the Role
We’re seeking a detail-oriented PV & ESS Engineering Plan Builder to join our solar engineering team. This role is responsible for producing professional, code-compliant plan sets for photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (ESS) projects — residential and light commercial. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, has strong technical drawing skills, and understands how to translate sales designs into permit-ready construction plans.
You’ll work closely with project managers, sales designers, and installers to ensure each plan meets local jurisdictional requirements, utility interconnection standards, and NEC code compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Create complete, permit-ready PV and ESS plan sets using design software (e.g., Aurora Solar, Helioscope, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or equivalent).
Review sales layouts, roof/site measurements, and structural data to produce accurate electrical and mechanical designs.
Design PV string configurations, inverter layouts, ESS schematics, single-line diagrams, and conduit runs.
Incorporate AHJ and utility-specific requirements into each plan set.
Perform system calculations (conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, voltage drop, etc.) to ensure code compliance (NEC 690/705/706).
Coordinate with engineers of record for PE stamps, as required.
Maintain organized project files and version control of plan sets.
Collaborate with permitting coordinators to resolve corrections or revisions from building departments or utilities.
Support the field installation teams with technical clarifications when needed.
Stay current on NEC code updates, local permitting standards, and manufacturer specs.
Qualifications
Required:
3+ years of experience designing or drafting solar PV systems (residential or commercial).
Strong proficiency with AutoCAD, SketchUp, or comparable CAD software.
Working knowledge of NEC Article 690, interconnection standards, and typical ESS configurations (Tesla Powerwall, Enphase, SolarEdge, etc.).
Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, site plans, and electrical schematics.
Strong attention to detail and organization.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams.
Preferred:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy, or related field.
Familiarity with solar permitting software and utility interconnection portals.
NABCEP PV Design Specialist certification or equivalent.
Experience in ESS (Energy Storage System) layout and interconnection design.
What We Offer
Competitive pay and performance bonuses
Growth opportunities in a fast-expanding renewable energy company
