n8n Automations Expert Who Has Their Own Ideas

I am looking for an n8n automations expert who can build workflows that actually move the needle—automations that drive real outcomes, generate revenue, and make life easier for both my clients and myself. This isn't about creating basic zapier-style connections. I need someone who understands how to architect complex automation systems that integrate AI tools, populate data intelligently across workflows and spreadsheets, and trigger actions in other applications seamlessly.

The right candidate will have extensive experience with n8n and understand how to leverage AI APIs (like OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar) to gather context, process information, and feed it into workflows that actually do something meaningful. You should know how to connect various tools, APIs, and databases to create systems that work together without constant babysitting. If you've built automations that have directly resulted in time saved, money made, or processes dramatically improved, I want to hear about it.

You should also have coding knowledge—JavaScript/Node.js at minimum, since that's what n8n runs on. Being able to write custom code blocks, manipulate JSON, work with APIs, and troubleshoot when things break is essential. If you can only drag and drop pre-built nodes without understanding what's happening under the hood, this isn't the right fit.

Here's what I'm looking for specifically:

Deep knowledge of n8n workflows and how to architect complex automations

Experience integrating AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) into workflows to add intelligence and context

Ability to work with Google Sheets, Airtable, databases, and other data sources

Strong coding skills (JavaScript/Node.js especially) to write custom functions when needed

Understanding of webhooks, API calls, authentication methods, and error handling

Experience with data transformation and manipulation within workflows

Knowledge of how to optimize workflows for speed and reliability

I need someone who is a self-starter and can figure things out without constant hand-holding. If you run into a problem, I expect you to research, test solutions, and come to me with options rather than just saying "it doesn't work." Documentation is also crucial—I need to know what you built, how it works, and how to maintain it. As part of the interview process, I will give you a test project to complete. This will be unpaid, but it's necessary for me to see how you think, how you approach problems, what your workflow looks like, and whether you can deliver something that actually works. I've been burned before by people who talk a great game but can't execute, so this test is non-negotiable.
I would prefer someone who can work on Spain time (GMT +1), Monday through Friday, roughly 12PM-5PM. All time tracking will be based on California time, though.. I pay twice a month via Wise—on the 1st and 16th. The payment on the 16th covers work from the 1st-15th, and the payment on the 1st covers the 16th through the end of the month.
