???? About Common Studio
Common Studio is the design and systems consultancy arm of Common Entity — a multidisciplinary collective working across creative strategy, intentional housing, and cultural production.
At Common Studio, we care about how things feel, function, and flow — whether it’s a visual identity, a user journey, or a reimagined living space. Our work often bridges strategy and structure, beauty and clarity.
This role supports spatial and architectural projects — focused on translating early-stage renovation concepts into actionable design direction and clean execution plans.
?
???? About the Role
We’re seeking a hybrid Architectural Designer & Renovation Project Coordinator to support renovation planning for small-scale, design-forward residential properties.
You’ll help turn raw ideas and evolving site needs into refined plans, visualizations, and timelines — and serve as a calm, communicative presence throughout the project lifecycle.
This is a cross-functional role ideal for someone who enjoys both design development and hands-on coordination with trades, vendors, and project collaborators.
?
???? What You’ll Be Doing
?? Spatial Design & Visualization
• Create and revise floor plans, layout options, and basic elevations
• Produce light renderings, concept boards, or mood-driven visuals
• Organize design materials and intent for field-friendly sharing
• Support early-stage layout and reconfiguration decisions with clarity and practicality
????? Project Coordination
• Break down high-level goals into phased scopes and timelines
• Track open items, material selections, contractor needs, and dependencies
• Prepare field-ready diagrams or visual summaries for on-site teams
• Coordinate with vendors and trades across plumbing, electrical, finishes, etc.
???? Research & Systems
• Source or suggest fixtures, materials, vendors, or contractors
• Maintain clean systems in Notion, Google Drive, or Airtable
• Contribute to standardizing renovation project rhythms as we grow
?
???? Project Context
You’ll support the design and delivery of small-scale urban renovations (2–4 unit buildings, ~1,000 sq ft/unit) in Chicago — including kitchen and bathroom upgrades, space planning, and phased execution.
You’ll collaborate directly with the founder (a systems thinker and designer) who provides high-level vision and is deeply engaged in on-site progress.
?
???? You Might Be a Great Fit If…
• You have experience in architecture, interior design, or spatial planning
• You’re confident creating floor plans and mood-driven visuals
• You’re calm and communicative when working with contractors or changing site needs
• You enjoy taking a vision and translating it into digestible, actionable materials
• You can move between creative exploration and execution structure
• You like seeing real spaces come to life — and knowing your work helped make it happen
?
???? Tools We Use / You Might Use
(We’re flexible — these are just examples)
• AutoCAD, Rhino, Revit, or SketchUp (for layout and design files)
• Enscape, Twinmotion, or Lumion (for renderings — light or realistic)
• Canva or Figma (for boards, specs, diagrams)
• Notion, Google Drive, Airtable (project coordination)
• WhatsApp / iMessage (for quick trades comms)
?
???? Example Projects
• Reimagining a 2-flat into a long-term rental + creative live/work space
• Creating simple renderings to guide a contractor through a phased update
• Organizing a three-week sprint across electric, plumbing, tiling, and install
• Designing a budget-conscious finish schedule that still feels elevated
