Task: Create three distinct Mission Statements to select from
I am looking for a writer to work with on an ongoing basis who can capture the soul of our organization and craft a cohesive Mission Statement, Vision/Case Statement and write regular articles for a blog etc. as well as help us generate a social media following and promote our fundraising efforts.
Step 1 will be to write a Compelling Mission Statement using the following summary of our work and an example of the kind of compelling statement that we are after.
Summary of EBR’s work
EBR (East Bay Revitalization, Inc.) is a California nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the middle class in the greater San Francisco East Bay region where the high cost of living and the scarcity of affordable housing and living wage jobs is creating an economic divide that is taking a tremendous toll on the strength and diversity of our communities.
EBR builds, manages and finances affordable co-housing and co-work spaces near transportation centers in marginalized areas. We focus on mixed use development (buildings that contain both living and business spaces) to achieve maximum impact in helping vitality get a foothold in high potential areas that suffer from neglect and blight.
By focusing on developing affordable living spaces where students, artists and entrepreneurs can live and work or easily commute, we are helping ensure that people are not continually pushed out of the rapidly gentrifying areas of the East Bay. By preserving some of the best developments for hard working people who are spending too much on basic necessities we are helping to save the middle class.
The communities we build take advantage of the latest advances in construction efficiency, durability and sustainability. In addition to superior construction processes, we implement the latest scientific and psychological knowledge base to create cohesive and welcoming co-housing and co-work environments. Everyone has their own space and access to community resources such as urban gardens.
The flexibility of our environments lend themselves to all manner of uses for everyone from young families, seniors, artists, disabled adults and students, to name a few.
We believe that people are at their best when they have access to safe, decent homes are engaged in meaningful work that allows them to reliably provide basic necessities for themselves or their families. When people feel secure, they are more likely to contribute their talents to the community at large and to help those less fortunate. A strong middle class allows for greater self sufficiency overall which reduces the load on entitlement programs meant not as a long-term supplement to the able bodied but a safety net for the truly needy.
The science behind the ‘scarcity trap’ shows that when an individual is taxed with persistent scarcity of anything, food, money, time, that person will ultimately succumb to the side effects of the loss of flexible intelligence and executive control functions, regardless of raw intellect.

The following video showcases one of our tiny homes and highlights our unique building process. This raw footage is being edited to create a micro-documentary.

The following is a news story about a recent tragedy in our area. Many people loathe to leave their communities in the Bay Area are forced to live in substandard and makeshift living spaces to cope with out of reach rentals.

EBR is a young organization and is just getting started in making a difference. Below is a link to our Facebook page and our website. We do not think either of these web presences does a very good job of reflecting who we are but we include them anyway as examples of what needs to be worked on:

Below is a sample of what we think is a very powerful mission statement to use as a guide:
“Next to the human face, hands are our most expressive feature. We work with them. We play with them. We comfort and love with them. An injury to the hand affects a person professionally and personally. At Vector Health Programs, we give people back the use of their hands.”
The time period for this task is one week. We are happy to answer questions or provide clarification on the assignment. The time allotted for completing this task is up to 5 hours with a minimum of three different compelling statements to chose from.
